Frequently asked questions
How do I import transactions from a CSV file?
Folio can import transactions from a CSV file you choose — for example, one exported from your bank's website. Folio only reads the file you select. Review imported records afterward and adjust categories as needed. Folio 1.0 supports US dollars only.
How do I back up and restore my data?
Export a JSON backup from Settings and keep it somewhere you trust; you can restore from it later. You can also export your history as CSV. Both formats are readable plain text and are not encrypted, so treat them like any financial document. Files saved to a synced folder may be uploaded by the service that manages that folder.
Where is my data stored?
On your Mac. Transactions, budgets, bills, goals, and settings are stored locally. The Folio app doesn't send them to us, and there's no account or cloud sync.
Does the screen lock encrypt my data? What about FileVault?
The optional Touch ID or Mac-password lock controls access to Folio's screens. It does not encrypt the data file, and Folio doesn't separately encrypt its database. To help protect stored data, turn on FileVault in System Settings and protect your Mac user account with a strong password. macOS handles Touch ID and password checks; Folio never receives your fingerprint or password.
How do I get started?
Your workspace starts empty. Add a transaction from Overview, or use the CSV menu in Transactions to import your own records. The figures in our screenshots are fictional examples; they are not added to your workspace.
Can Folio connect to my bank or sync between devices?
No. Folio 1.0 doesn't connect to banks and doesn't sync between devices. Enter transactions manually or import a CSV file.
Which Macs are supported?
Folio requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 15 or later.
Is Folio official accounting software?
Folio is provided “as is” for personal budgeting and planning. It is not official accounting software and does not replace professional accounting, tax, or financial advice. Use it at your own discretion, verify important figures independently, and keep backups of your records.
